Hey, are you gonna eat that ?

We are many parts...

Every once in a while I go to Mass with my friend Lauren. She is a eucharistic minister, which is a really fancy way of saying that she is one of the special people who is allowed to hand the wine or bread to the parishoners of her church during communion. I like to think it's a big deal and it's fun to see Lauren and her mom do it together, so I went with them to St. Thomas for Mass tonight.

It seems that every single time I go, they sing this song that I really, really like--and they don't sing it that often. It's as though my presence is integral to the use of the song. It's a song that was written in 1980 called "We Are Many Parts" and in the songbook, it's number 414. I came in and opened my songbook up to 414, only turning the page to further inspect the Nicene creed. I left the book open on the seat next to me and I kinda forgot about it. Then after communion, right after the priest announced that Mass was over, the woman who leads worship said "Open to page four one four, pleace. Four fourteen". I very loudly (this is a very small parish) said "YES!!" and was laughing so hard I could hardly sing. It's not a hard song to sing, nor is it a very good song; it's sort of in the vein of a commercial jingle, or a good Sesame Street song. Remember Ernie's ode to his rubber ducky ? It's kinda like that...

In other news, J. Koch is leaving for Oregon next Monday or Tuesday, which means I will no longer have a job. I don't really consider watching Jonathan to be a job, since it's actually a lot of fun as well as a means of income. How many other jobs have I had that I enjoyed this much ? Aside from Blue Collar, I can't really think of any. What other job allows you to hang out with your friend, make fun of him, use his computer to make comics about him (see image at right), and then eat Subway with his little brother ? It's pretty awesome. And, well, I let Jonathan do things like write "butthole" on my car in dry erase marker, use my money to buy Subway sandwiches (our month-long total : 48 sandwiches between two people). I thought this job would be more stressful that it has been, but it's been relatively calm. We've done art projects and learned about photography and Jonathan even joined the VFC coffeehouse team. He is trained on to make you coffee and will happily do so.

I think overall, it's been a good summer. I'm ready to go back to school, but I still have to wait another five weeks or so. I'm signed up for all my classes (philosophy somethingorother, abnormal psych, something that has the word "culture" in the title) and I have one book. Sometimes I think that life is moving faster than I am, and that I need to catch up. I'm too busy doing reading books and sleeping to get up and move forward. I feel like that's going to change soon, and that my relaxing summer was a break before things get a little crazy.
