It was a dark and stormy night...
Not really. I just wanted to be like Snoopy.
I started eating meat again, and I can't stop listening to the Smiths. Isn't that a bit of irony ? I have finally managed to pry myself away from In-N-Out burgers and Subway sandwiches and have graduated to sausages. Right now I am listening to Louder Than Bombs whilst eating soggy vegetables, pork sausages, some sort of potato thing and--uh oh--suddenly I've just realised that my palate has been reduced to pub food. Marvelous. Oh, and a $25-a-week Açai Supercharger habit. I love/hate Jamba Juice.
Other things with which I have a love/hate relationship :
- Peet's Coffee and Tea. I have worked every day since last Tuesday, and my next day off is this Saturday for the VFC retreat. I am quite tempted to not go to the retreat, since that would give me a much needed three day weekend and the ability to lay in for a while. With any luck it would be a rainy day, my favourite kind of weather, so that I could block everyone out and take the lightrail downtown to Trials where I would sit with a book and read and pretend that I'm actually in London. Uh, anyway... I can't decide whether or not I should go. I guess I should let Sarah know.
- Myspace. It's the only website that works on the computers at Peet's 105, besides Flickr and, frustratingly enough, Travelocity. I just tried to upload a picture of me not looking as though I spend all my free time at funerals, and much to my chagrin I cannot figure out the new upload scheme. When the heck did this change ?
- In-N-Out Burger. I know it's absolutely horrible for me, but really ? Give up spread and those fries and auuugggh, the buns are so good ! For a little while a trip to In-N-Out was a daily occurrence, as it's a block from my friend Nadia's house, but when I realised I had a one-way ticket to Fat Kid City, I decided it was time to back off and make it less of a ritual.
- Coffee. I have to be around it all day, and I quite like it. My personal favourite of Peet's offerings has always been New Guinea, but this morning I took a coffee class taught by the awesome Mo and realised that Kenya has been hiding its awesomeness from me all along. I drank so much at my class this morning (I usually have a cup or two a day, three at the most) that I was crashing by the time I actually had to work at three. But I do love my job and as long as they don't make me wear a horrible jersey, I will continue to be enslaved to their caffeinated endeavours.
- My car. I just replaced the front and rear brakes, rotated the tires, did some other stuff to it (well, no, the nice men at Tires Unlimited did, and I hold them in high regard for their efficiency and wonderful bedside manner; they responded to my worried cries of "Will it be ready by tomorrow !?" with not only the right answer, but they gave me a Cute/Obnoxious Girl discount as well). Last week I replaced the fuel pump and had Waffles drive me around for a day. That was actually kind of fun, having a chauffeur and all that, but as a result I am tremendously broke.
- School. I don't like school, but I love learning about pretty much anything, so I spend most of my time outside the classroom with my nose in a book for FREE. Occasionally I come to the realisation that no future employer is going to accept the School Of Life's diploma and that I should get one from an accredited school, only to block out that thought moments later. The Librarian is making progress on me, though, and it's probably only because he has beautiful brown eyes and I'd listen to him if he told me I should join the circus. So in the Fall I am taking a language course. Maybe something else, too, but for now I'll stick with the fun stuff.
And now for a list of things I love regardless:
- Trials. They have Boddingtons, a mayor or something, and is the place for conversations regarding the superiority of the £1 coin with one Thaddeus Cortez.
- "28 Weeks Later". I had serious doubts about this movie, and not without reason; "28 Days Later" was a wonderfully made movie about all sorts of things good movies could be about (good vs. evil, man vs. evil, man vs. himself, zombies, England, good soundtracks) and anything following in its wake had great potential to be really, really bad, or at least, a really bad idea. "28 Weeks Later" did not disappoint me in any way; in fact, every doubt I had was unfounded and to top it off there was a Monty Python quote. I love the use of colours, again, to portray mood. I love the overhead shots of London. I love the idea that someone could walk from St Paul's to Regents Park without getting hit by traffic. I love the implied historical analogy in the bombing of/fire in London (come on, hasn't that happened enough ?). As Rob said, the dialougue was at a good minimum and the majority of the emotion was shown in ways besides just saying "I am sad. Dad is infected, oh my oh my". I only really like three movies not including the Wilco documentary, so you're probably wondering why I am going on and on. I really just ran out of things to say.
- Oh, and John Hannah. I watched a boring Discovery Channel thing about the sinking of the Lusitania (boring, even for me and I really love shipwrecks, the British Navy, men in costumes, etc) on Saturday night because there wasn't anything better on television and I knew I recognised one of the actors from somewhere. I just couldn't figure out where. Then I realised on Monday afternoon that he was the really really cute guy (in a sort of John Cusack if he was Scottish kind of way) from "Sliding Doors". So what did I go home and watch that night ? Sliding Doors.
Bed, perhaps.

i'm with you on not wanting my saturday filled (i'm even not looking forward to leaving early to see bjork). while i havn't worked as much as you, i have been too busy this week and could use a day free.
let's make a deal, if you come on saturday, then i will come as well.
actually, i'm gonna go no matter what so you should just come anyways.
Hmm. I'm really not sure if I can do it. I have two more days work work left and I'm dreading them completely. I nearly called in sick today, but thought better of it (it'd really screw over my coworkers) and decided to just go in. But if tomorrow goes well (or if I can get off early) maybe I'll go for just the morning.
uh, i believe that our relationship is of the love/hate binary type...such a confusing, wonderful pairing of bookshelves we are...
Hey! You should definitely come to the retreat and hang out in the lovely redwoods with us. You can come over and I'll make you tea. Proper "the-Queen's-Own" black tea, and we can moon about England together.
Jo : I believe you do not communicate with me.
Rosa : You know my weakness...tea will get me to go places. It might even be why I go to work.
In all honesty, I feel like making an appearance, ie standing near the entrance to say hi then leaving. Mobility is not really my thing right now, and I kinda haven't the fondest feelings for retreats. What ? I can't think. Nap time.
I have also been listening to The Smiths and Morrissey non-stop for almost 3 weeks.
I am even dreaming Smith's songs, so I think I have beaten you in terms of amount of Smith's and Morrissey being in my head.
Woah woah woah... Dan, you need to mix it up a little. Throw in some Elton John or something, or maybe some Seu Jorge. That's what I've been doing.
"I wear black on the outside, because black is how I feel on the inside." The Smiths were my soundtrack for high school. I wore a lot of black turtlenecks, hung out at Cafe Pergolesi and tried desperately to be cool. Thank God I survived! To be honest, faint twinges of teen angst resurface when I listen to the Smiths now, and I have to reming myself that I am almost 33 years old, and that cool is PRETEND.
I bet you were really, really awesome ! I would like to go back in time and hang out with you. I wore black too, but not turtlenecks. Mostly just skirts and boots that made me nearly six feet tall. I was a doofus.
