Cranes

A Thousand Paper Cranes

The best thing about this time of year (other than the weather) is how some places seem to be completely evacuated at times. During the holidays, my neighborhood becomes lined with cars, and I'm certain the population more than doubles. I cannot figure out where these people come from. The plates on their car are from Kansas, Colorado, Minnesota and Tennesee. I wonder if the neighborhoods they are from experience an exodus that leaves them desolate and full of places for people to park their cars. I wonder which are like mine.

Tonight I went to Trials in downtown San Jose and it was empty. It's strange (but a little comforting) to see all the lonely goats out to graze while everyone else is snuggling inside or bundled up outside with their friends and family. There were so few people there tonight that, had I actually, whole-heartedly fallen out of my chair, it would have been embarrassing. Instead I threw myself from the chair in a fit of rage, heartbreak and disappointment. Sometimes the ground just seems so safe.

Trials?! Wow, I used to hang out there in the late 90s, when my best friend's boyfriend was working there. One night at Trials I met a handsome young man who came to be known as "whatnot," due to his extreme over-use of the word. We almost dated, but he didn't have the cojones to actually ask me out. Instead, he would say, "I hear that Indigo Swing is playing at Fuel on Friday--are you going?"
I'd reply, "Yes, I'm planning to."
To which he'd reply, "Maybe I'll see you there."
Lame, right?
